An historic winter storm is brewing for the southeast.

We all need to be prepared for hazardous roadways and probably power outages. Whether you get tons of snow, or an ice and snow mixture, the outcome is not looking good.
Here at Cain’s Able Plumbing, we are trying to prepare also. We will be providing emergency plumbing service, IF WE ARE ABLE. Our trucks are 1 wheel rear drive and DON’T perform well on snow and ice at all. It is not worth the risk to our technicians or property, to attempt treacherous roadways.
If we are unable to answer the phones, or check messages, due to lack of power or internet, we apologize. This outcome will be beyond our control.
We also need to be able to give our employees time to prepare their own households for the high probability of losing power. They need to take care of their families and stay safe also.
Please take note and make a list of supplies and prepare yourselves as well.
Lots of water – Store in a place where it will not freeze.
Candles
Shelf stable food
Cooler – So you can keep food outside and protected if needed
Extra blankets
Board games or cards – To pass the time in a power outage.
Firewood – If applicable
Propane – If you have a gas grill
K1 heater – And K1 or diesel
Gas for your generator if applicable
Fill your car gas tank – It may be the only way to charge phones, tablets, PC etc.
Charge power tool batteries in advance
We wish the best outcome for everyone in this storm.

With the winter season approaching it’s important to know what to do if your pipes freeze and what you can do to prevent this from happening. It’s also important to know which of the pipes in your home are most at risk for freezing.
Outdoors hose bibs, swimming pool lines, and water lines for irrigation systems are just some of the few that are most at risk. For outside hose bibs you can disconnect the hoses from the outside hydrants. This can prevent them from freezing and breaking. Freeze covers are also a great option and can provide extra security. If you have a backflow device that is on irrigation it is ideal to have them properly winterized. This would involve taking the device apart and setting the valves in a position to where they do not pocket water.
Supply lines that are located in unheated spaces are also at risk. These lines include water lines in your basements, crawlspaces, garages, and attics. Pipes that have little or no insulation surrounding them are at risk as well. If you’re able you can add insulation to those areas in order to maintain a higher temperature.
When the temperature is below 20 degrees you can leave your faucets dripping slowly. This is ideal especially if you are on city water as the flowing water makes it harder to freeze. You can do this with a septic system, but be aware that it can fill a frozen leach field with access water into the septic system. If you find that you have to leave your home for a long period of time; leave your heat on no lower than 55 degrees. A few other tips include: keeping garage doors closed if there are supply lines in that area, open kitchen and bathroom cabinets and keeping the heat set at the same temperature throughout the day and night.

We spent the weekend helping some friends and animals in need. In order for them to get water to their animals; they were having to run water in buckets as far as 300 yards away. We can only imagine how challenging this is especially in this heat.
We were able to help by running water lines and installing hydrants in both their back pastures and their barn. We trenched ditches for the water lines and then ran pex lines to the back pasture and barn. They were also able to use our trencher to install power lines into their barn. This little bit of help is a much better solution than having to haul buckets of water several times a day.

Did you know that we can replace your tub and shower? We recently had the task of replacing a tub and shower with a walk-in shower. Please keep in mind that our company does not do the carpentry work, trim around the tub or repair sheet rock, but we will do the plumbing and demo and remove the old shower and tub.
Look at the pictures below. They show the final installation of the new shower. Once complete, you would need to call your carpenter or handy man to finish and trim it out the way you prefer.
